Trophy Inshore Charters

BY CAPTAIN DREW MESIANO
We’ve had good to excellent fishing in the Northeast Florida region early this summer. Starting inshore, the Mayport Jetty has been producing Redfish to 40″ with a few Black Drum, Jacks and the usuals mixed in. Mullet are here, so live and cut bait has been working fine. Further inshore we’ve had great action on Redfish to 35″ averaging around 5 pounder’s off the Intracoastal Waterway and flats both north and south of the river. In addition there has been very good Trout fishing in the river from jetties all the way to downtown. Usual topwater surface walkers baits and floater diver plugs at first light or dusk, can produce a Trout of a life time. There’s been fish in the 3 to 5 pound range being caught regularly with an occasional fish over 10 pounds. Flounder have been on the increase. We are seeing an occasional 4 pounder’s coming over the rail but mostly 1-2 pounder’s. We’ve been getting 2 or 3 a trip while Redfishing and not targeting Flounder. Offshore on a recent trip out 15 miles we had 3 Cobia and numerous Snapper too! We have been scoring 20 pound Cobia and a Gag Grouper closer in, in about 50′ of water depth. The Dolphin are still in close, for us 7 miles, several gaffers came this past week to 20 pounds. Kingfish were out there as well. Bait is all over the beach. Let’s go fishing!
